Discover Your Skin All Over Again
When looking for an effective skin treatment, we can fall into the trap of the salesman, believing that the product they boast about is the best. It’s better to take advice from someone who has experience dealing with the product and its effects on different skin types.
Studies show that 75% of women don’t know their skin type.
Knowing your skin type is a bit more complicated than observing whether it is oily or dry. Furthermore, there are many different reasons why your skin may appear oily, red, dry or tired. An esthetician can safely examine your skin, determine its needs and recommend products or lifestyle changes that will be beneficial. A proper evaluation can help you determine whether irritation is a result from your diet, environment, products etc.
Becoming aware of which internal and external factors affect your skin type will help you a great deal. Take an inventory of:
Environmental exposures; that includes sun, pollution, and humidity
Internal factors such as hormones, medicine, and vitamins.
Dietary factors: Is your diet high in caffeine, alcohol, or processed food? Do you know if your diet is alkaline or acid based?
Your current skin care regime: How often do you cleanse? Moisturize? Exfoliate?
*The media tells us to be concerned about age and the effects of aging, (wrinkles, fine lines, sagging, etc.). But what we should do is treat the condition of the skin instead of treating the skin for age.*

Oh the Necessities
As we go through the economic ups and downs, there are always 3 industries that never lose faith. That would be because there are certain things that many people consider a necessity and cannot live without, even in a recession.
• Tobacco
• Alcohol
• Skincare and Cosmetics!!!!!
Now men can’t get by without out there booze and cigars, and the women place skincare and makeup
extremely high on their list of priorities. It becomes a necessity. And honestly, if I were stranded on an island, I’d want my mascara right there with me.
If we put how we look and feel above our grocery list, or car payment, then it says something to the degree of how important it is to us that we use products that provide the benefits and results that we seek for tirelessly. Sometimes when we need a pick-me-up it can come in a brilliant little tube of new lipstick from the drugstore, but when you are shopping for skincare, make sure you put some effort into it!
Look at labels! Try a sample first, see if you like it. See an esthetician who will tell you exactly what your skin type needs. Develop a skincare ritual that you will have in your life to improve your looks and your thoughts! Get a product that wows you and skip those impulse emotional buys.
Let’s face it, if we are willing to consider skincare a necessity (which you should!!!) then we should be willing to get ourselves some good product. Give yourself what you are worth!
Got Protection?
Ah…. Vitamin D! There you are! Let’s all go soak up some sun. It’s beautiful, it feels great, and it will burn you to a crisp!
I love laying out on the beach as much as the next person, but we have to consider what a few glorious hours will make us regret later (we could talk about all kinds of “glorious” hours but let’s stick to sun tanning). When we want to love our nicely bronzed skin tone instead of having vast amounts of pain because you are so sun burnt you can sit properly. Embarrassing.
Of course Aloe is a wonderful go to healer in such situations; let’s discuss the pre sun burnt option. Which SPF is really effective? Slathering a ton of goop on your body that doesn’t even protect you is an annoying waste of time. So, what to know about SPF…
1.) If you use a sunscreen with an SPF 15, you can be in the sun 15 times longer that you can without sunscreen before burning.
2.) The bottom line is protecting your skin. Use an SPF of 30 or higher if you are going to be out in direct sun for long periods of time.
3.) Don’t even consider using expired sunscreen! Yuck.
4.) The American Academy of Dermatology strongly suggests that people should not over expose themselves under the sun and should seek shade as much as possible. Most importantly, it is recommended that individuals constantly exposed to the sun should apply sunscreen every after two hours, whether at work or at play.

A Lovely Message About Balance
We spend a majority or our lives learning about opposites. What is right and wrong or good and bad, but when do we really spend time on being in balance? When it comes to the care of our bodies and our skin, we have to try and maintain a balance, especially when it comes to pH.
Now, instead of forcing you to relive your high school chemistry class days, I am going to show you an informative glimpse into the world of pH. We need to put our attention on the ideas around acidity and alkalinity. It is common to think that acid is bad and alkalinity (or base) is good, while that might be true in some cases, it is not always true. The North American diet is full of junk food and over processed food which is acidic and too much acid can lead to health problems. Heartburn, bloating and burping are common reactions to a very acidic diet. Not so ladylike, if I do say so myself. But it can also have more serious effects as well, so the answer? Balance.
Well a balance of pH that is, which is not necessarily 50/50.To maintain health, the diet should consist of 60% alkaline forming foods and 40% acid forming foods. To restore health, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods.
The alkaline foods help to cleanse your body of bacteria and toxins, which are not pleasant for anyone. So, let’s challenge ourselves to become more conscious of our diet in terms of acidity and alkalinity. We need to restore our pH, we need to help our bodies feel good.
If you would like a chart of all these wonderful foods under their respective Acid or Alkaline categories, subscribe to the blog and leave a comment below! I will email a copy to you directly
Reclaim Your Radiant Glow!
With spring just around the corner, a new and invigorated energy sets in. Now is the time to really focus on that radiant glow that we feel we lost during these chilly winter months.
Instead of hitting the drug stores and buying the newest and hottest trends in skin care and makeup, why not try a simpler and much easier approach…your food. It is much more beneficial to adjust a regular habit, such as eating, then to go in blind to find a miracle product that promises results overnight.
Who would have thought that what we put into our bodies actually affects our skin? Well, actually a lot of people! It seems that almost everywhere except America has a better and more conscious approach to food and how it affects our bodies, moods, and energy levels. Here we are bombarded with over processed and pre-packaged food which strip away the good nutrients in the food .
Now we have become unintentionally lazy and buy foods that appear to make our lives easier, microwavable chicken nuggets, pre-made pasta dishes, or if you live in a city like New York, you can’t escape the hotdogs and pretzels being offered to you on the streets. We need to get back to the intention of how food was supposed to be eaten. Chewed, and digested properly. We have turned this process into a rollercoaster for our bodies to handle. If we gave our bodies a week (or even a few days) of more fruits and vegetables, we would feel an improvement as well as see a difference in our skin.
If you want to achieve a healthier glow, in a completely natural way, turn to fruits and vegetables. I will name 5 foods that you can easily add to your diet. And if you find it easy enough, take a look at the three cleansing Skin Fitness Diets that I am preparing for those who want to look good and feel good.
Don’t get nervous about the fat that everyone warns about in avocados. They have good, monosaturated fats and their health benefits far outweigh their caloric and fat contents. They have 60% more potassium than bananas and are rich in Vitamin B, E and K.
GINGER!
Ginger is great for other uses than alongside sushi. Ginger can increase the skin’s radiance and has been shown to decrease inflammation which may have been due to acne or psoriasis. Ginger is an antioxidant, which means it attacks the free radicals which contribute to skin damage and aging.
Who doesn’t love a good trail-mix every once in a while? Nuts in moderation can have wonderful benefits for your skin. They are rich in Fiber and Antioxidants such as Vitamin E, which are super important for fighting the signs of aging. Eating nuts has also been shown to reduce your risk of heart disease.
Yay! More Antioxidants! Seeing a pattern? Easily added to yogurt or cereal, berries are great for your skin because they help the body manufacture collagen which helps the skin look supple and smooth. These lovely additions are a great source of Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
CARROTS!
They make
your eyes twinkle, right? Well they’re actually good for your skin and eyes because they are a high source of beta-carotene. They are also rich in Vitamin A, which aids in the development of skin cells and the maintenance of proper skin cell health. A vitamin A deficiency can lead to dry skin.
Well there you go! It isn’t about a quick fix, it’s about doing what is right for your body and your energy. Try adding a few of these foods into your diet and see how you feel. I guarantee that a bag of carrots will satisfy you mentally and physically more than a trip to that vending machine will!

March is a really wonderful time for Skin Care and Beauty. Spring is nearing and we all want to look beautiful when it is time to put the hats and scarves back in the closet in exchange for some tank tops and sunglasses.
Also in NYC, we just had the International Beauty Show. It is a trade show for companies to come and demonstrate their products. One of the fabulous booths was for SatinSmooth. It is a really great company with some fabulous new treatments.
DermaRadiance – A new innovative approach to dermabrasion using Flower Peel Grains, gently exfoliates and stimulates your skin for a smooth softer looking complexion. The aromatic fragrance and natural healing powers of the plants (Lavender, Rose and Tea Tree) create a new level of microdermabrasion experience.
SmoothSculpt – Is a skin tightener, perfecter and sculptor; focusing on the treatment of the Extra Cellular Matrix, which supports blood flow and collagen stimulation to plump and firm the skin. The cleansing effects on stagnated fluids help provide beautiful smooth contours to the face and body.
