Question of the Week

How often should I get a facial?
-LM from San Francisco

It’s like going to the gym. The more often you go the better the results. I have different protocols for each client depending on what their skin needs and certain preparation for special events. I have weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and every other month and seasonal visits. They are also combined with how well you take care of your skin at home. It all comes down to how you wish to look in a year, 5 years or 10 years from today.

The earlier you start, the better you are going to look when you get older. I first recommend those who are between 16 and 23 to start using the right skin care for their skin. Avoid sleeping with Make-Up! This goes for all ages. If you had your Make-Up on all day and were exposed to street air, you can imagine what gets stuck in your pores. If you want to have clear pores, you must wash your skin before going to bed.

I suggest you find the right skin specialist to address your skin issues and have a program created for you to achieve the results you desire.

Have a glowing radiant skin,

Julie Lindh

Preserving Your Skin

In last week’s blog we talked about the role of serums, which repair and rejuvenate the skin and the cells; now let’s talk about preserving of the skin. How do we preserve the skin while not making it too oily, or too dry? How do we maintain balance in our skin? How do we prevent breakouts?

I highly suggest doing your research – look at what the moisturizer is going to do for you. Know when to apply it. Is it for daytime or nighttime moisturizer? Know what climate are you in, so you can find a moisturizer that fits your external factors. In the end it is meant to protect your skin from daily exposure, hydrate the outer layer or control extra sebum from your pores.

Not too long ago at one of my Workshop tours, I was explaining what happened when our skin is really dry. To understand why we need moisturizer and how it works I brought up a DRY SPONGE. Imagine how a dry sponge look when it is really dry – it shrinks and becomes quite hard. If you moisten it, it will expand and look full and soft. Here’s another example, a LEATHER BAG. If you invest in a beautiful and expensive Prada bag, you know you want your bag to maintain its PRADA quality and to always look new by treating it well. Now what if your bag looks sad, or has been in the closet for years, dusty and the leather looks super dry and lost its new glow? Now you don’t have to relate yourself to the examples but understanding that hydrating the skin can help to minimize the appearance of fine lines and improve the quality of your skin.

I have several crèmes and gels for different skin types to help repair, hydrate or control for all different seasons. From my own line: Tea-Berry Hydra Crème, Winter Hydra Crème, Firming Lift Crème, V Nutrient Crème, Oil Balancer Gel or my newest product which is between a cream and a serum. It is called Preserve and is a part of my new 28 Day Ageless Skincare Kit. If you would like to know more about the products click here

Question of the Week

Why is my neck a different color than my face?

Yati from Malaysia

In my Skin Fitness Facial I always give the neck love and attention with peels and masks due to the questions I get when it comes to care for the neck area.

There are 3 most common neck issues we are covering today and tips on how you can avoid some of the issues by giving your neck more attention.  I have included a home made mask recipe that you can do at home for a mini neck treatment. Another great tip is to do a SkinFitness workout to shape and strengthen the neck area.  My Skin Fitness Workout video will be available in June but if you want to know begin creating a younger looking neck now, contact me @ jlskinfitness@gmail.com

Common questions:

Old looking neck

First of all we don’t show our neck as much as our face. The neck is always covered under the scarf or jackets or shirts.  We also don’t tend to focus on the neck when we apply the serums and crèmes. I know we want to save all the good stuff for the face but neglecting the neck is a no no.

Treat your neck the same as your face if you don’t want to have your neck look 10 years older than your face.

Darker or lighter neck

  • Often people notice that their necks have a different color than their faces. When it comes to sun exposure, it is common for people to forget about their necks, but they are getting exposure too! You must include your neck in your sunscreen regimen– applied in upwards motions!

Loose neck

  • If you have lost a good amount of weight, you could have sagging skin, which begins on the jaw and down to your neck. You could have very visible lines appear on your neck. One quick tip is to stand straight and stretch your neck! But for a great solution do your skin fitness workouts, and target your neck area.

BEAUTIFYING FACE , NECK & DECOLLETE MASK

Please do not do this mask if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or have highly sensitive skin.

The papaya enzyme helps to digest dead skin cells, which also gives micro circulation in the skin.  Minor redness may occur.

Papaya – 3tbls mashed up

Plain Yogurt- 1tbls

2 tsp lemon juice

½ tsp baking soda

Direction: Blend together to a nice paste. Apply on clean face, neck and décolleté, even hands. Leave for 10-15 mines. Relax and have your eyes closed. Then rinse with cool water and follow with your favorite serums and crèmes. You can do this once a week for long-term benefits.

Until next time, have Radiant, Glowing skin.

- Julie

The Role of Serums

I have always been into serums, I call them magic potions. If I were asked to bring 3 skin care products on a stranded island, I would say serum, serum and SPF.

I think most of you already know that my main objective is to Correct, Repair, Rejuvenate and Preserve the health of the skin. Serums are a big part of that.  They can help to correct the imperfection you see on the surface, repair past damage, rejuvenate the cells and preserve the youthful look as well as delay signs of aging caused by diet, stress, lifestyle and more.

Thinking back to when I first experimented with my product line, I wanted to find ingredients that would help to renovate my own skin – how to look fresh and younger because I wasn’t getting any younger, and being in this business I had to be on top of things. I knew my clients were craving the same thing as well. I chose to start with 5 serums and based it on my 4-part concept in my treatments.

If you recall, some of you were actually the first people to try out my serums back then. And based on your testimonials…voila! It led me to continue building the line and I now have about 28 products from creams, gels, SPF, serums, cleansers, toners and exfoliants for different skin issues.

These products provide incredible support to my SkinFitness facial because they help to prepare your skin with each visit as well to renovate and prevent future skin damage.

So how do you find the right serum?

Take a look at your skin and see what concerns you would like to address first. Is it spots, uneven skin tone, sensitivity and redness, fine and deep lines, old scars or sallow looking skin? Once you decide what to focus on you get the serum that is right for you. But, this does not mean that you can address all your skin issues at once. Don’t confuse the skin. I usually give 2 serums to my clients. One for AM to repair or rejuvenate and one for PM to correct. Serums have a higher concentration of active ingredients and they have smaller molecules which means they are able to enter deeper in the cellular layer and do their magic — but only if you address your skin issue the right way.

Again, I cannot say this enough — no matter what you decide to do, do what works for you and your skin care goals!

Question of the Week

What food group for the skin should I focus on in Spring?

Question from McKenzie, in NYC

Hello McKenzie,

That is a great question. For me spring time is all about introducing your body to Antioxidant ingredients.

The sun is peaking out more and more, and you are outside being more active. Increasing your Antioxidant intake can help fight free radicals – which basically make your skin age faster, and if we can avoid that easily by eating more antioxidant rich foods or supplements, hey why not, right? I cannot say this enough, please everyone be good with your SPF as well!

The most common causes of free radicals are excess sun, smoking, stress and obesity.

Some examples of great antioxidant foods are blueberries, grapes, strawberries, ginger just to name a few!  For a delicious Antioxidant-rich treat–try this smoothie recipe below!

Banana, Blueberry, and Almond Butter Smoothie

Makes 1 smoothie

2 sliced frozen bananas

1/2 cup frozen blueberries

1/4 cup almond butter

1 cup raw almond milk or coconut water

Ice

1. Remove skin from two bananas, slice and place in plastic baggy or storage container and freeze. (Overnight works best)

2. Remove frozen bananas from freezer, break slices/chunks apart and place in blender

3. Add a 1/2 cup frozen blueberries (raspberries or strawberries are okay too)

4. Add 1/4 cup almond butter

3. Add 1 cup of almond milk

4. Blend

5. Add more fruit or almond butter to adjust flavor, if desired.

6. If you want a thicker smoothie, use less almond milk or add a few cubes of ice.

7. Enjoy!

Embrace the Spring Season!

With winter behind us, we shed our dry, tough skin for beautiful skin that will accompany our Spring wardrobes wonderfully. Since we are now in a more humid environment, we need to change our moisturizers from our heavy creams that we use during winter, to a lighter moisturizer for the day- time hours. If you have dry skin, you can still use a heavy cream at night, but during the day we do not want to apply a moisturizer that we will end up sweating off.

When it comes to sun protection, I recommend SPF 15 if you are not going out in the sun. If you are going to be exposed to the sun you should use SPF 30 or greater. Fair skin may need higher SPF. BUT – if you’re not going to reapply when you are out in the sun, then don’t even bother. You must reapply every 2 hour in order to protect your skin effectively. Make your skin protection part of your ritual.

I will soon be adding a tinted moisturizer with SPF 30 to my skin care line. It is perfect for the Spring and Summer months because you will get great coverage, without having to apply make-up. It’s a Spring and Summer must- have to include among your skin care products.

Waking up and seeing the sun outside might bring a smile to your face, but our skin can get quite confused during Spring because the weather has so many variables. It can go from one extreme of dry heat to extreme moisture very easily. I recommend using serums in your Skin Care regime in the morning and at night. The key is balancing your skin, not applying anything too heavy or too light, especially during the day.

Featured Treatment- Herbal Green Peel
This is one of my very own secrets. I use it to handle my fine lines and uneven skin tone. Hey, even skin specialists have skin concerns and secret tools that we don’t want to reveal sometimes! I’ve been doing the Herbal Green Peel since I was 18 years old, but it was not until five years ago that I decided to reveal this peel to a few of my clients who were looking for something different. The Herbal Green Peel is now a popular request among my Red Carpet clientele. Why did I keep this secret?

Because everyone wanted a quick fix! Skin care trends are geared more towards botox, fillers, and laser treatments, rather than (the often slower-working) natural treatments. But this natural, chemical-free herbal peel has been proven to be an effective alternative to the more extreme options, and people are gaining interest.

What is it?

It is an herbal-based, CHEMICAL-FREE peel that has been around for 50 years. Its natural ingredients have been proven to improve skin tone and wrinkles. Herbal peels are acid-free, which is surprising since the results are so impressive. They are formulated from safe, pure, natural plant ingredients, yet they are still successful in non-surgical exfoliation. They combine natural ingredients such as algae, aloe vera, calcium, coral-rich minerals, marine plants, nettle, salts, vitamins and more. The herbs stimulate blood circulation and intensify the skin’s metabolism, encouraging skin regeneration. The results are beautiful and rejuvenated skin.

Why it works?

The peel helps to slowly shed off previous skin damage and rejuvenate the skin layers. Whether you have acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines, uneven tone, sun-damage, or droopy skin, the peel will help to correct and repair.

It’s uber-amazing and if you really want to have ageless skin, this is the number one treatment I would recommend before botox, laser, or surgery.

Who is it for?

Anyone who would like:

-younger and healthier looking skin

-to minimize current lines

-firmer skin

-brighter skin

-acne-free skin

-more even skin tone

-fewer or less visible scars

Of course nothing is magical or effective in just one day, but with this peel you will definitely see significant results after your first session. In addition, the treatment will continue to slowly repair your skin in the days following. Imagine! In just 5 days your skin will look healthier and younger!

Pair this treatment with my SkinFitness Diet and you will not only look great but feel even greater. As I always say, it takes more than a day to clean an old house.

A Green Peel Testimonial
I have been going to Julie Lindh for years. I sought her out because I needed help, help that dermatologists and other experts couldn’t offer. My skin was crazy–dry, 0ily, broken out, uneven tones, and I had scars that I couldn’t ignore. Her method is advanced, aggressive, and it works. After seeing her a few times, I tried her way of doing a green peel. It is a non-chemical way to revitalize your skin, but she adds in extras that give me results that last.

Recent Testimonial

“Julie introduced me to a whole new level of skin care. She gave me new skin and completely changed my lifestyle. She introduced raw food into my life, and it completely changed me. She customizes everything and truly understands my skin. Julie is ahead of her time, and her work is extremely advanced. SkinFitness is not just about the facial, it’s about your entire body. With Julie you are paying for a customized, advanced treatment with results that go beyond the skin.”

Switch it up!

Let’s talk about consistency and skin care regimes.  In order to have the best results we have to switch it up a bit.  Actually I put my clients on a 3 month protocol where I assess their skin every 3 months to determine which products they need based on the 4 Skin Factors.

Your skin cells are receiving nourishment from your skin care products, if you continue to use the same products, after too long they will not respond as well to those products.  It’s as if someone were to feed you spaghetti for 10 years every day, for every meal…hmm not so appetizing.  Basically we need to introduce new products to the cell to keep getting results.  Now how do you know which products to use?

I provide a consultation to discover what changes have occurred based on your Skin Factors and the current season of the year.  With a seasonal skin care regime you can change your products and even your diet for better results according to the time of year.  Has your environment been very dry or very humid? How has your mood changed, and how is your stress level? What are you eating? Maybe it is time for a detox.  How has your exposure to the sun affected your skin?

All of these skin factors are addressed in my one-on-one consultation. We can discuss which products will suit you the best, and which ingredients to look for when you shop.  If you want to know more about the Skin Fitness Regime email jlskinfitness@gmail.com

Stay tuned for our next posts that break down the seasons into months and give a detailed description on what to look for in terms of  Skin Factors and Skin Care Regime!

New Shoes…New Face!

Now that we are finally in Spring, there is a feeling of renewal. Often this is the time when we feel the need to redo our wardrobe, re-organize the house with a bit of spring cleaning, and refresh our look.

Getting a haircut and having our nails done is great, but what about our skin? There are great ways to rejuvenate the skin and recapture that beautiful glow!

Chemical peels are popular treatments in spas, but I recommend using an herbal peel that is free of chemicals and acids. I am a big fan of the now world famous GREEN PEEL® treatment method that was developed by Christine Schrammek.

I myself have been using the Dr SCHRAMMEK Herbal Peel for over 15 years and I find it to be one of the best deep peels available. It is a completely natural, safe and highly effective peeling method that treats problem skins while also offering the perfect answer for a healthy vibrant, good looking skin at all times.

I am currently on my 4th day of the peel and am always extremely pleased with the results. I offer this treatment to my clients so email for prices and appointments!
